Does Size Matter?

You know the saying, bigger is better. That same saying is becoming true for mobile phone screen sizes as well. Does it hold up though? Do you need a large phone screen these days? It seemed not too long ago that even 4.3 inches was considered big.  When the DROID Charge came out last year it was mocked and ridiculed for being large and clunky. While actual phone size and thickness has decreased in mobile phones these days, the length and screen size still continues to rise.

Take for instance the Dell Streak which was launched even before the Charge. That phone with a 5 inch screen was a disaster and never caught on. A year down the road  the Galaxy Note was launched which upped its screen size to 5.3 and Samsung had a hit on their hand. It’s rare to find a Smartphone that isn’t at least 4.3 inches these days. So what happened to the small phones?

It’s unclear what exactly changed people’s perception. Phones nowadays have much better designs and can pack more into a smaller design. The Galaxy S3 is a massive phone, but it is so thin and light it doesn’t exactly feel like you are holding a large device. The Note on the other hand is absolutely gigantic. You can do a lot more with the extra screen real estate and it is a lot easier on your eyes.
I know I am not alone, but as nice as these bigger devices are, I still like to have a smaller phone. HP had good intentions with the Veer, although they took that idea a little too far (pun is definitely intended). The iPhone is a decent screen size, but I think the sweet spot is between 3.8-4.3. Right now I have the DROID Incredible 4G which is 4.0 and the HTC Radar which is 3.9. These phones at this size still resemble phones that fit into your hands and don’t cover your face while at the same time giving you enough space to see and do what you need to do.

This trend with larger screen sizes isn’t going anywhere. With the Note 2 being announced, it one ups its predecessor by increasing the screen size 2 tenths of an inch to 5.5. I would love to get feedback for current Note owners or people who are interested in purchasing the Note 2. What appeals to you about it? For me personally if I need a bigger screen, that’s what Tablets are made for. Some use the excuse well I don’t want another device, but is it worth caring around a huge phone that more functions like a phone? A Tablet is 100% designed to take advantage of the larger screen where the Note is just a larger phone, with limited Tablet functions. What are the situations you could see where having the Note would serve you better than say a Tablet could?
