Spotify, the Napster of today (but legal)

Overview- As the title suggests the best way to describe Spotify is that it’s like Napster for this generation. Except that it is better and most important legal. Spotify in a nutshell allows you to pick out whatever music you enjoy and stream that content. Whether you want the whole album or just a few songs you then put the songs you enjoy into a playliat. For example if you wanted to save a whole cd you could just the name that playlist what the album is called. One of the best things about Spotify is that they do have so much music to choose from. Back with Napster you heard a great song on the radio and you went home and downloaded it. Spotify is the same thing. You can also star songs and make an ultimate collection of music. Recently various apps have been added that enhance your experience and use of the service.

What’s Great- Well it’s free to start, but with a catch. Depending on how much you plan on using Spotify on the go, you will need to pay $9.99 a month. Even if you don’t listen to a lot of music, you aren’t going to get a much better deal. This is the price of a CD and even though you don’t technically own the music, the variety is huge. If you really like a CD that much then by all means go out and buy it.  Having Spotify though now let’s you listen to it before it comes out. Its sort of hard just to grasp what exactly Spotify does and why its so amazing until you use it. Almost any track that you can think of is available for your  listening pleasure whenever you want and wherever you want. Its amazing to be able to pull up my entire music collection anywhere I am. There are cloud services that can do this too, but some of those cost money and you still have to pay for the music. Spotify takes care off all of this.

What’s Not So Great- It does cost $9.99 to get streaming on any devices besides your computer, but honestly it still is an amazing deal and worth the money. With so much music avilable to you, it. can be frustrating and overwhleming to find just exactly what you are looking for. However Spotify has ways to help you such as the top 100 streaming tracks, radio stations, and related artists.  Spotify also just received a nice iPad update and for Android as well.  Something worth noting for Android users is that with the new update landscape mode has disappear.  For phones its not that much of an issue, but for tablets it can be very annoying.  Spotify hasn’t officially released a statement yet so we will see if they add it back in the near future.

Overall- If you listen to music you need spotify, if you buy music, you need spotify, if you play music on the go, you need Spotify. Pretty much if you are even remotely interested in Spotify it is worth the money. It is extremly easy to use and the power that it places in your hands is incrediuble. If you aren’t willing to shell out money, donwlowad the free version on your computer and try it out. I promise you Spotify will not dissapoint when you find that track you haven’t heard in years, but Spotify has on there to listen. That’s why SPotify is one of the best mobile apps/services out there today.

Price/Devices- Free (need subscription though).  It is available now on every OS however it only works for certain Blackberry phones (no Playbook support yet either), and for WebOS it works, but it has some performance issues.  You can sideload it onto the TouchPad and install an HD patch.  I personally use it and its fantastic.
